Submariners' Trafalgar Dinner
By Shropshire Life on January 28th 2012
The annual Derbyshire Submariners’ Trafalgar Dinner was held at the Spot Banqueting Suite in Derby. Admiral Sir Trevor Soar began the evening by reading a response from Her Majesty The Queen, and Lady Soar was the principal guest – Lady Soar launched Derby’s affiliated submarine, HMS/M Ambush, in December 2010. Other guests included the Mayor and Mayoress of Derby, Cllr and Mrs Les Allen, commanding officer of the Ambush, Cdr Peter Green RN, crew members of both HMS/M Ambush and Vanguard, and Gillian, Jamie and Arron Molyneux from Wigan. Following the meal a Submariner statue was presented to Gillian Molyneux for TS Sceptre Sea Cadets in Wigan from the Derbyshire Submariners in memory of Lt Cdr Ian Molyneux, who was tragically killed on board the nuclear submarine HMS Astute last year. Further presentations and toasts brought the evening to a conclusion, including the presentation of the Tom Smith Memorial Submariner Trophy to Mr Ron Slater of Stanley Village.
